Condo Styling Do's and Don'ts
How small details can make BIG differences in the look, feel, and spaciousness of your new condo.

With the vast style-offerings of condo projects today, it is becoming ever-easier to find a unit to suit even the most eclectic tastes. Yet once the unit is found and the purchase process comes to a close, it is time to furnish and decorate. This can raise several issues for first time condo owners, particularly those coming from single-family homes. Less space means space usage must have dual utility, furniture must be multipurpose, and lighting must work with the unit’s architecture and layout to give a more open feel.  Here a few suggestions on the do's and don'ts of condo style.

Beware of huge furniture pieces!
While they may look nice on the showroom floor, it is important to consider the scale of the condo when choosing furniture. For this purpose, take accurate measurements of the unit and make a list of this information to bring with you furniture shopping. Then, be sure to take the tape measure with you to measure what you like to be sure if it will fit properly. Avoid sofas with puffy armrests as these can measure up to 9 inches, taking a total of 18 inches of room space. The general rule for condo sofas is to not exceed 7' long by 36" deep, with slimmer modern designs being the preferred choice.

Diversify space.
In apartments, multipurpose and multifunction give you more room in a smaller space by taking items out of view, and out of the way, while not in use. Look for unique storage-driven furniture such as coffee tables and ottomans with flip tops for storage or which house additional pieces. Room dividers with integrated shelves give a little privacy and sound dampening, while making good use of space.

Let there be Light, but not too much.
Glaring, sterile light in small spaces only make them seem smaller. To avoid this, use multiple light sources that range in effect and provide a gentle glow. As well, look for lighting layouts that accentuate colors, architecture and decorative elements through a combination of direct and accent lighting applications. Using a variety of light sources will not only make your condo look better, but multiple low wattage bulbs will use less energy as well.
