With Candy Spelling's Holmby Hills mansion up for sale, the astonishing $150 million asking price makes it the most expensive residential listing in the United States. The 56,500 square foot mansion makes it larger than the White House- and the largest home in Los Angeles County.
Candy Spelling is widow of the famous TV producer Aaron Spelling and mother of actress Tori. Although the home is reported to have 100 rooms, Candy says she has never counted them herself. The mansion sits on a 4.7 acre estate and features its own barbershop, a kitchen that can accommodate hundreds and a parking lot that can hold 100 cars.
The 63 year old owner says that the home has become a little much for her, so she has decided to downsize to a 16,500 square foot Century City condo.
The three-story home was originally built in 1991 and has hosted many esteemed guests such as Prince Rainier, Prince Charles and Jackie Kennedy. In addition to the few amenities mentioned previously, the owner also has the opportunity to enjoy an automated projection room, a bowling alley, wine cellar, flower-cutting room and even a humidity-controlled silver storage room. No mansion would be complete without a swimming pool, pool house, tennis court and a citrus orchard. The house staff has their own accommodations with five maids' bedrooms and two butlers' suites.
The impressiveness of the mansion cannot be debated, but the $150 million asking price may be another story.
Many wonder if a sale price of that size in today's economy would be possible and some expect the asking price to drop before a new owner closes on the property. However, area Realtors are quick to point out that if you find the right person, anything is possible. There are plenty of people in the world with enough money to purchase one of the most esteemed estates in all of Los Angeles. After all, it’s not every day that such a home comes up for sale.
Other nearby homes that have been listed in the $85-$100 million range have either had to take a large reduction in asking price or have failed to sell altogether. The record sales price for a Los Angeles County home stands at $94 million, a sale which was completed back in 2001.
Candy Spelling has already purchased the condo where she plans to live at the top two floors of a Century City building. She purchased the residence last summer for $47 million which set a record in and of itself, being the highest price ever paid per square foot for an L.A. condo- $2,848. She plans on moving in to the condo by this time next year.
