Getting away from it all

Fell in love with the beauty of this century+ old mill that continues to hold the quaint structural amenities of years gone by. The upgraded interiors contrast the exterior of the aged complex. Exposed duct work, concrete floors, red bricks that compliment the interior walls and the hum of the river is heaven. Walk the grounds with your wife/girlfriend/significant other and you are transformed into the country without driving off the property. Your dogs will love the open grounds and the beauty of the river. Wildlife abound at this picturesque property that few can find at the end of that long driveway. Units are multi-use, so you can use the unit as a business and live in it also. Owners and tenants love the complex and create modifying the interiors to their own taste and desires. This complex is truly unique and a diamond in the rough. Each unit is unique and a marvelous transition from a working mill to a beautiful and peaceful condominium complex. You'll love them as I do.

    Nightmare!

I lived here at WHM with my friend for a year and what a nightmare. Leaks, roaches, you name it!
WHM is also an HOA, so good luck flagging down people who actually tell you this. We had no idea and called repair people out there only to have them sent away by the home owners while you have a clogged sink rotting in your kitchen. It took days to have that taken care of. There are specific people who can work on the building for EVERYTHING. So you have to be able to find someone to tell you that. I was given a thick manual with a list of rules for their "community" and people to call for repairs, but we had to let them now they were coming so one of the HOA members could be there. So everything was on THEIR time.
Our sky light leaked (rained) in on us on day one and we had a difficult time getting anyone to help us EVER and the realtor was so clueless. I wondered if she actually knew anything about these lofts. Any time I called her she would act like she had it under control and then totally forget about us all together until I called her again and she'd be so apologetic just to put me off yet AGAIN. This went on for an entire year with her.
My friend and I were so happy to move at the end of our lease. I am not someone born with a silver spoon and am far from being a snob or feeling like I should have all my demands met. I am from a small town and my family is lower middle class. I felt rather high class to be living in something so nice. It SEEMED nice. So I just needed to clarify that. looks are deceiving.

WHM is pretty and all the bells and whistles UNTIL you actually live there. I thought it would be a nice place to live until I graduated and was thinking of buying out there in the future. My parents thought it was nice too and a good place for me to be to study and be away from the chaos downtown. What a shock it was to realize what a dump it was in reality. We had a horrible roach infestation on top of everything else. We should have known better though because when looking at some of the lofts we always noticed dead roaches everywhere. One of the single units I looked at before deciding to live with my friend was filled with dead roach corpses. While the realtor tried to pass it all off as "It's just been empty for so long!" I wonder why.
Even some of the home owners will flat out tell you what a nightmare it is unless you actually BUY and "have the money" to spend to fix all the botched up jobs they did when renovating it. One of the nicer home owners told me that they were shocked to find out just how many issues their loft had and if they had to do it all over again would NOT have. It took them years to get their loft the way they want it.
I an merely scratching the surface with this review. I am not trying to be mean or anything, but sharing my personal experience. Maybe we just got a bad loft. Who knows, but others also had similar experiences.

Some of the owners are DYING to sell these places because nobody really wants to be stuck with a lemon. The owner of our loft kept trying to talk to us about buying and it began to get really annoying. Once we expressed interest (HUGE MISTAKE) of possibly buying (before we know the truth) it was like he was frantic to get us set up and was almost badgering us and sugar coating everything that was going wrong but he didn't want to fix anything. Just put a band-aid on it. He would rarely ever answer our calls and put it off on the realtor who was like talking to a brick wall. We were always told "we are not the property management" Not sure who was or who to talk to, so we set our minds to just deal with whatever and get the (bleep) out of there! When our dryer broke we resorted to just going to a friends house. It wasn't worth dealing with.

While I do think it's tranquil and just beautiful out there (I don't mean to sound mean or rude about it or anything) it's not worth the long drive IF you go to UGA (we did) AND if you want constant problems with plumbing and pests and older neighbors that give you mean looks. I agree with the above poster referring to "snobs" this is actually true. We tried to talk to them, but were almost looked down upon. I guess they felt like we were going to throw wild parties or something which we never did. We were embarrassed to bring anyone out to our leaky roach motel!

All in all RENT or BUY at your own risk. You've been warned!
I now rent a small house near the campus. I am very happy now and have a land lord that is available whenever I need her.
Please do your research and ASK questions. This was my first time moving and I learned a LOT!

    I live here

I am so sorry to hear that the young lady had such a bad time. I have lived here 6 years and don't ever remember meeting her. Nor do I remember two young girls living together except in bld 5. Their parents removed them after they had a party and the police were called.
The problems with your unit was your owner. All of the condos are individually owned. Your skylight needed to be replaced and should have been. Roaches are controlled by having a pest control contract. A clogged sink could have been handled immediately by calling a plumber to your unit. It is done all the time. You were given very bad advice and your owner should have helped you. The large book you were given contains the by-laws of the condominium. You only had to read the sectiion that applied to your situation. Pets must be walked on a leash etc.
I'm sorry you felt the seniors were snobs. Actually we enjoy the young people out here. Many of them are good friends. We attend their concerts, plays, roller derby events and anything else they are in.
Lois Creech

    Love that River!

I have lived here for 5 years and never want to leave.Every season on the river has its own personality and living here is like living in a bubble where the rest of the world doesn't exist. No traffic noise-just birds and water-and yet you can be at Publix in a few minutes. When I get too old to handle the stairs up to my 2nd floor unit I am thinking of moving to a downstairs unit and starting over. Every unit is so wonderfully original and interesting that decorating is a creative challenge and a joy.
I have read the unfavorable reviews and all i can say is that different people want different things throughout their lives. If what you value is nature, quiet, and the uniqueness that comes with an old historical building then you would be in heaven here. It isn't for everyone obviously, but then I don't want just anybody to live here either. There are people who are here to make this their long term home and others who are just passing through.
Awesome lofts

These reviews are old so this is 2017 and these lofts are awesome and many of them have or are currently being redone ..great community of owners and a few renters who have started monthly get togethers ..dog friendly... volunteer HOA board who has the lofts headed in a great direction... the ages of owners run Late 20s and up so full of different people artists and professionals retired and empty nesters ... it's like living in the mountains with nature but close to everything ...not for everyone but if you want to help create a nature paradise you can or read a book by the river you can. Fly fish out your door or kayak you can... run or walk around the grounds you can ... decorate modern or farmhouse you can ... all the lofts are becoming and some already have becoming their owners own unique vision.... we were lucky to purchase our loft 1year ago and we are currently redoing the kitchen .. if one is for sale I wouldn't hesitate to go look at a gem of a place nothing compares to it here in Athens
